Fan Friday #54 "Sail Away Ladies" Malcolm Dalglish

My offering this week for Fan Friday is a piece that I was invited to play for a high school choir in Cincinnati, OH. I found it very difficult to play a rhythm pattern that another hammered dulcimer player plays just because it’s their rhythm. Does that make sense? Malcolm Dalglish is a phenomenal player and composer and I’m sure that the rhythms and chord patterns that he plays come pretty natural to him. After the rehearsal though, I had a better grasp of what the director wanted. The song structure came to me a lot easier later that night. You might not catch it but let me lay a little bit of the genius of this music out for you. The songs starts in 4/4 then there’s a few measures of 3/2 thrown in there just to make you work. Then a couple 2/4 just to make sure you’re not sleeping and then it’s got a lot of double time mixed in. Like I said, it’s a great piece and I would accept the challenge again to learn and play one of his pieces. After the show the director shook my hand and thanked me and then wanted to make sure that I would be on board for more shows. MOST DEFINITELY!!!!

A Piece Of History In My Hands.

While I was at Raintree Heritage Music Festival someone asked if they could bring by a hammered dulcimer that they had but have never played it or tuned it. I said, “Sure, I’d love to see it and tune it for you.” When she came back this is what she showed me. I was totally floored when I saw this and what it meant. So I took pics and sent this to Ray and Sue Mooers of Dusty Strings to see what the history of this little beauty is. Here is what Ray wrote back to me.I especially like the part about how this helped launch him into full time music making.
Hi Ted,
Yup, that's a piece of history all right. That instrument was on of a batch of 21 single bridge instruments that I made to use as rentals for students in a class I was teaching at the University of Washington back in those days. It's interesting that this one made it's way out of the Seattle area clear back east. They were all sold eventually to customers out here on the West coast. I'm sure you saw Sue's signature there as well as her sister, Gayle French's signature. The year 1979 was the first full year of our new business. I had quit my previous job as a restaurant manager in January of that year and started Dusty Strings Dulcimer Company as a full time job at that point.

All the best to you,
Sincerely,
Ray Mooers

A Very Full Week.

Well folks, honestly?… I’m pretty tired today! We have had lots going on and since I don’t believe you want the “Pride and Prejudice edition” of our week, I’m a bit unsure what stories to tell and what to leave out. I’ll give you an outline here and see if it’s concise enough when I finish up.
We had a wonderful, wonderful weekend at Raintree Music Heritage Festival this past weekend. Numerous Fan Friday friends were there- Sarah B, Scott and Janice and their grandchildren (who our kids had the most fun with!), Brian & Alexis, Rick and Holly and 2/4ths of the Shepherd family. Aside from the delight of meeting up with so many old friends, there were some wonderful people there who became new friends too. One of the vendors next to us really enjoyed the kids and donated a gift to us that is just a Godsend, a little lap dulcimer with PILES of kid-friendly sheet music. Can you help me keep a secret? We’re saving it for Lyssa’s birthday next week.
Sharon did a bang up job planning this festival for the first time and we already look forward returning to a future Raintree Festival!
I took the Fan Friday quilt along, hoping to get a little closer to completion, cause I’m really, really close to finishing the quilting on that pretty wallhanging for you all. I got a few stitches in, in-between clients and carrying baby Jesse around… boy is that child heavy! This was his first festival and he did splendidly. The kids were wonderful help, taking care of the booth, each other and Mom too.
So now that we’ve been home a few days and have the groceries restocked, Ted is in Cincy for an event tomorrow. He has the privilege of accompanying a high school choir tomorrow. They will be singing a Malcom Dalgliesh arrangement of the traditional song, Sail Away. Very cool. The public does have access to this concert so look it up if you’re in the Cincy area!
Friday he heads into the Studio with Eddie to finish up his final recording and the mastering of the new CD, Chocolate Skies. (The story behind the title is tucked into the Store page of our site, if you’re curious.) We’re almost there folks! Your support has made this such a wonderful project to work on. The photos and the graphic design work are in place and the CD will head to the duplicators on Monday, thanks to the cheers and encouragement coming from your corner. Ted still cites your support on his difficult of recording as one of the most meaningful moments for him in the recording process!
Those of you up in MI- we have a special Saturday workshop for HD players and a concert in Midland, hosted by the wonderful community of players up in MI. If you’d like details on this, check the calendar or just email Ted- he’d love to see you in MI!
And Sunday?… you can bet we’ll be resting!
I promised the kids a movie night tonight so I’d better be getting ready for that. Have any of you seen the movie “Hugo”? We listened to the audio book and just loved it. I have high hopes that this will be a beautiful film. Time to go make popcorn.
Blessings and peace to you,
Donna, for Ted, Leaha, Wesley, Lindy, Seth, Lyssa, Lyra and Jesse.

It’s good to be back playing some new music for you. After being in the studio recording the new album (see website www.TedYoder.com) it’s fun to play for you again on Fan Friday. I’ve been saving this song for some time even though I never played it before this week. I tried to do certain styles of it before but nothing ever took until this week. I always heard a jazzy kind of thing with it but I like this version much better. Fits me and it will sound very cool when it’s touched up. Hope you like it and it’s great to be with you all again. Take care.

"Day 1 In the Studio" solo hammered dulcimer

Things are moving along great here in Indianapolis. It sure is great having someone at the helm to tell me “that’s enough” and “I think we got it”. We’ll see what day 2 holds but everything is looking and sounding good and as you can see in the title, I think this is going to be a solo hammered dulcimer project. It just sounds really good in here. And it’s inspiring.

Donna always knows how to reign me in. So she sat in with the video camera while I played different version of “In May” for her to see which she liked. She’s a good woman to sit and listen to my variations.

Day 2 "Journwy to the Studio" with Ted Yoder

Another day of working on the song list trying to find a cohesive list of songs. I just had a pow wow with Donna over the song list and I think we got 11 songs that we’re really happy about. I felt a little lost today because I was lacking clarity and focus on what I wanted to say with this album but now I can go to work. I know what I want to play and I know what you want me to play.

Cool, it’s coming together now. Yay!!!! Let’s make some music!

Day 1 "Journey to the Studio" Ted Yoder on YouTube

Alright, here it is. My journey to a new album. I have 10 days to get ready and I wanted to have you right there with me. You can still help by sponsoring a song. This will help with the financial end of the project and you’ll get some extra videos and tracks that others won’t be privy to. I look forward to sharing this experience with you and I’m really looking forward to making you a killer album.

The Rainbow Connection on Hammered Dulcimer

So my hands were freezing and Donna had to go inside to get some gloves on, but we shot the video and the song came out okay. I’m a little disappointed that I hit a few notes that I shouldn’t have but after 5 tries I figured this is what it is. I did have a lot of fun learning this one and I’m sure it will go over well in the assisted living places. They really should have had a hammered dulcimer on the Muppet show. That would’ve been sweet. Enjoy everyone…

Fan Friday #51 Nanci Griffith "Love at the Five and Dime"

You would think that a 3 chord folk song would be easy to play. Not so…! It was challenging in a number of ways. One, this was played with a guitar both picked and strummed. I wanted to try and emulate that sound as much as possible while playing melody too. Also Nanci played it in Bb which, for those of you who do not play hammered dulcimer, would be like trying to pick someone up off the floor while you’re standing on a chair. Hands are stretched way to far apart and your equilibrium is all thrown off. Not a good thing when you’re playing the hammered dulcimer or when you’re trying to pull someone up to your level.
Anyway, I think I pulled it off. Hope you enjoy it and I hope this gives you new ideas for songs to send me, not that I’m short of any to choose from… No really, keep challenging me or if you just have a special song, please send it.
This song was very fun and I hope that Shawn and his wife enjoy it as it was for their anniversary this month.

Fan Friday #50 New Original Tune by Ted Yoder on Hammered Dulcimer

So I’m breaking from tradition here with the Fan Friday videos this year. I knew I couldn’t go all year and not share my original creations so here’s the first submission to that.
I had a couple rough spots in the take but it was better than the first. This song came after a rough first part of the week and as the sun broke through the gloom of clouds and rain, I felt the truth break through to my heart about who I am and what I have to give. This is what worked it’s way out. It’s a little rough but I think you can hear where it’s going and hopefully you’ll enjoy it. I don’t have a title for it yet so please lend me your thoughts.

I started thinking about this song a couple weeks ago but then the move happened and it was put on the back burner. Tonight I pulled it out without even running through it once in concert. So this version of it is two times new as well. This song also takes me back to a time before I met my lovely wife Donna but we always enjoyed Dan together when I introduced her to him while we were dating. Ah the younger years… Enjoy everyone, it’s good to be back.

Two can play at this game.

So I had a gig on Friday night and I invited a good friend of mine, Joshua Messick, who just happens to be a national champion as well, to play with me. We had loads of fun and only an hour to practice but we came up with some fun stuff anyway. That’s what music is all about right. So here’s a little video of us just goofing around.

Fan Friday #47 "The Water Is Wide" solo hammered dulcimer.

This request comes from Pam in Cincinnati. I was searching for inspiration and found it in a candle. I lit one and the arrangement just seemed to materialize out of nowhere. I really like this, what I would call, simple but effective arrangement. I’ll touch it up and it will be ready for your consumption. Enjoy.

"Dancing Queen" by ABBA on hammered dulcimer. Really?

Well here we go. Doing a Beatles song is one thing but to try and pull off ABBA is a whole other game. I’m not trying to say that ABBA was better than the Beatles only that they’re very different in style.
This was a lot of fun to learn and in some respects it came fairly easy but as you will hear, sometimes my hands just were not remembering exactly where to go. It’s one part muscle memory and one part knowing what note you’re supposed to hit.
It was a late night stint for me but with Wesley’s help we got it shot at the 11th hour for you. I hope you enjoy this spread of styles that’s coming out for Fan Friday. The family is enjoying it here for sure. Wes was already trying to play this song between my practice times. That’s pretty cool to see and hear.
Thanks for the requests and keep them coming. Please share these videos with your friends on Facebook and such. Spread the music.

A Beatles dedication to DulcimerDan.

When DulcimerDan asked for this song a couple weeks ago I didn’t know it at all but when I listened to it…wow. My goal is to work it up so that I have a little percussion loop behind it, made with hitting the dulcimer, and then make a little melodic loop to play behind the whole song for a droning harp kind of sound. When you see me in concert next, I hope to have that part worked out. But here you go, the song in it’s infancy. with a little UGH, in there too that Donna wouldn’t let me take out. Enjoy.

Enjoy.
